Genetic Predisposition. This is by far the biggest cause of thinning hair among both women and men. Known as androgenetic alopecia, or female pattern baldness, this condition occurs as a result of the formation of the hormone DHT in your blood. DHT goes right to your scalp and binds itself to your hair follicles, literally smothering them to death.
The most common cause of progressive hair loss in women, FPHL (Female Pattern Hair Loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia), affects about 30 million American women, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
